Sleep Calculator

Free Online Sleep Calculator

Our sleep calculator helps you find the optimal time to go to bed or wake up based on 90-minute sleep cycles. By aligning your sleep schedule with your natural sleep cycles, you can wake up feeling more refreshed and energized, even with less total sleep time. The calculator accounts for the average 15 minutes it takes to fall asleep.

How to Use

Choose your mode: select "I want to wake up at..." if you know your alarm time, or "I'm going to bed at..." if you want to know when to set your alarm. Enter the time using the time picker or click "Use now" to set the current time. Click "Calculate" to see recommended times for 4, 5, and 6 sleep cycles. Options marked as "Recommended" represent the ideal 5-6 cycles that most adults need.

FAQ

What is a sleep cycle?

A sleep cycle is a repeating pattern of brain activity that occurs during sleep, lasting approximately 90 minutes. Each cycle consists of several stages: light sleep (N1, N2), deep sleep (N3), and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Throughout a full night, you typically go through 4 to 6 complete cycles.

How many hours of sleep do I need?

Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, which corresponds to about 5-6 complete sleep cycles. However, sleep needs vary with age: teenagers need 8-10 hours, school-age children need 9-11 hours, and older adults may function well on 7-8 hours.

Why do I feel groggy when I wake up?

Grogginess upon waking, known as sleep inertia, often occurs when your alarm interrupts a deep sleep stage mid-cycle. By timing your wake-up to coincide with the end of a complete sleep cycle (when you are in lighter sleep), you can reduce sleep inertia and feel more alert immediately.

Does it really take 15 minutes to fall asleep?

On average, it takes a healthy adult about 10-20 minutes to fall asleep. Our calculator uses 15 minutes as a reasonable average. If you consistently fall asleep much faster or slower, you may want to mentally adjust the suggested times accordingly.

Is it better to sleep less in full cycles?

While completing full sleep cycles helps you feel more refreshed, total sleep duration is still important. Sleeping only 4 cycles (6 hours) regularly may lead to sleep debt over time. Aim for 5-6 cycles (7.5-9 hours) when possible for optimal health and cognitive performance.
